December, 2007 "The end of the year ? Shiwasu"

Time flies so quickly, and we have only a few days left in this year. We may hear a "ting-a-ling" when Santa Claus is coming, or a night watch-bell on Dec. 31.
Here in Toyama, we had a little snow at the end of November for the first time this season. When November ends, there is a violent gust and thunder. It is called "wakening yellowtail" and it's a sign to start fishing for yellowtail in winter. A television commercial has been run, saying that a man is having sliced yellowtail boiled with vegetables over a glass of beer, hasnft it? In my case, I choose distilled spirits (shochu) with water and sliced yellow tail boiled. Water for diluting is ready, in a GAIO series pitcher. I had a "Sliced yellowtail" house party. The pitcher can pour water with crushed ice so my guests prefer it!
An extensive launch for MH WAY, which Mr. Hasuike has produced, was executed in Japanese stores. Cucciolo in GEDY, designed by Mr. Hasuike, became a big hit through magazines and newspaper. For DESUS, we make greater efforts in over-the-counter sales to introduce our products to whomever we receive inquiries from. Meanwhile, we are now arranging the "system" to support those who cannot purchase at our stores. Look forward to it!
I flew from Fukuoka, where a winter coat is not necessary even in December, to Sapporo, where an outfit for cold weather is required. I had good food from many places to build up my stamina for next year. I'll try to act positively next year, too. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. (Written by Hiro, Sales)

November, 2007 "Design Wave 2007 in Toyama"

I visited "Design Wave 2007 in Toyama" held in Takaoka City, Toyama on Nov. 8. Design Wave was held in Toyama City last year. It was my second time to visit the exhibition.
I dropped into gRetrospective of Kuroda Yasuofs oeuvre" held near the exhibition hall before visiting it. Mr. Kuroki had been the director at Design Center of Toyama till recently. When he worked for Sony Corporation, he set out many projects one after another, like designing of the SONY Logo and developing the "Walkmanh, so he was called "Mr. Walkman." In the retrospective, there are many projects working at SONY Corporation and starting the private office. I myself audited his lecture "Universal Design" when he used to be the director and interviewed about "Design in Milan" when setting up DESUS project. At that time, I was overwhelmed by his passionate and aggressive attitude which never felt his age. I once again recognized how great he was through his exhibition.
"Product Design Competition 2007 in Toyama" has an open review in 10 designersf products as well as last year. The theme is "Life with Family." I supposed this theme might give broad meaning and generate products from various categories. As expected, various products were proposed. We all enjoyed watching the open review, but contest judges engaged in a heated discussion. The product which won the grand prize last year was finally launched recently. Each prize winner this year may be commercialized next year.
After the competition, there was a design seminar: "Design based on sensitivity from life." Mr. Kazuya Shimokawa, Ms. Kanae Tsukamoto and Mr. Koji Hatakeyama developed discussion. Sometimes their discussion was over my head, but I learned a lot.
At the exchange, I developed relationships with designers across the nation. Whenever introducing each other, I was surprised to hear "He/She designed the hot seller!!" Hearing untold stories behind product development or product branding from them, it was time to say good bye. Time flew quickly. I hope we will develop a product with them some day. October, 2007 "The coming autumn outing season"

It has been cooler and the weather is getting a little more bearable after the boiling hot summer.
In this season we have lots of delicious food, like vegetables and fruits. It is the best season to visit some resort places on weekends.
If you make a bento, TENGA series should help make the best lunch box! In particular, the "H-5" is a great match for sandwiches. When you have an open-air party in the park, the Tumbler & Plate, in GAIO series, is well-suited. You can choose the plates for food size or amount. Plates are durable, light, and made of plastic. Kids can use them safely during a party.

Talking about open-air parties, I understand why garbage receptacles are scarcely placed at resort locations; notices like gBring your garbage back home with youh appear everywhere. I myself have not tried to use gdisposable productsh at such places. The kitchenware must be for both daily and outdoor use. The GAIO selection is based on our customersf requests. You will never regret choosing it!

GAIO series' Pitcher is on 144 page of gELLE atable No. 34 Nov. 2007,h issued by Hachette Fujingaho. We hope you take a look at it.

I will visit Design Wave 2007 held in Takaoka, Toyama and report on it. I am looking forward to the Design competition. Please refer to the website http://dw.toyamadesign.jp/ for details.

September, 2007 "Report of Business trip in Paris and Milan"

I visited two exhibitions during the week of September 7 to 14: gMAISON & OBJET,h held in Paris, France and gMachefh in Milan, Italy.
As it was my first time to visit gMAISON & OBJETh and gMachef,h as well as my first trip to Europe by myself, I felt nervous all the time. What if I missed the connecting flight, or my baggage got lost at the airportc? Luckily, my anxiety was proved unfounded.

The purpose of my trip: Exhibitions. gMAISON & OBJET,h especially, blew my mind with fabulous proposals as well as the products themselves. I reviewed the same product at gMachefh the next day, but to be honest, the display at gMAISON & OBJETh was much more impressive than that at gMachefh; there was a world of difference. Talking with Mr. Makio Hasuike, a designer, gMachefh was stagnant this time, and the number of booths was smaller than usual due to strife between organizers and presenters. The exhibition hall is really gorgeous thoughcGood Luck, gMachefh!

In Milan, I had a good look at the showroom in the Hasuike Makio office after report of DESUS series and discussion for its future. The products designed by Mr. Hasuike were all gathered and that reminded me how wide the product range is and how long Mr. Hasuikefs design history is. I made a decision again that we'll try to make our DESUS series everyonefs favorite. Finally, thank you for everything, people in Paris and Milan!

p.s. Typhoon No. 10 arrived at Kanto area the day before I left from Japan. Because it shook all rain off there, I enjoyed fine weather in both Paris and Milan. When I came back to Japan, many people pointed out, gYou got suntanned, especially your nose!h I'll bear in mind that sunscreen is must-have wherever I go. (Written by Sumitani, Project Manager)

August, 2007 "From northern climes"

It was extremely hot this summer, wasnft it? After my summer vacation, I went on a business trip northward and further northward to seek summer resorts.
I was in Sendai and Morioka August 21st to 23rd, and in Sapporo August 30th to 31st. It was much hotter than I expected in Sendai, but cool in Morioka and Sapporo, as expected. I encountered my friend who lives in Sapporo during my trip and he said gItfs Hot!!h though.

My pleasure on business trips is to have tasty local food while enjoying the local climate and view. I heard a beautiful singing cricketfs song; I recognized it was Autumn. I ate my fill of ox tongue in Sendai and sushi in both Morioka and Sapporo. While coming back from my business trip, I had a mutton barbecue party with mutton I bought as souvenir. DESUS items once again were fully used!

GAIO series has finally been released. The exhibition will be from October 3rd to 9th at gSogawa FERIOh which opens September 21st in my hometown, Toyama. The theme is gTwo Maestros.h DESUS series, designed by Mr. Makio Hasuike, and ALESSI products, designed by Mr. Stefano Giovannoni, will be presented and sold. We are looking forward to your visit.

Watanabe and Sumitani report a tour of Paris and Milan next time. They will tell us about the most attention grabbing trade show, MISON & OBJET (International Trade Show in Paris)

July, 2007 "Long-awaited summer"

Time flies! Four months have passed since I transferred to the DESUS project team in April. I still feel refreshed to work here.

Finally midsummer has come. The month of August is gcurry,h isnft it? Ifve been absorbed in cooking gsweet potato curry,h using sweet potato instead of potato. This was introduced by a TV drama gXX detective 2h. Sweeter and more delicious than what I expected, this curry became a much-loved dish for my family who doesnft like sweet potato.
My monthly DESUS item is gTENGAh HR1 and HR2. They are the best sizes for friends of curry, pickled vegetables or shallots. Just store them in the refrigerator and take them to the table directly. They perfectly match a dining scene, being made of clear acrylic.

I went to the exhibition gKitaoji Rosanjin and Okamoto Taroh in Takaoka Art Museum last weekend. All I knew about Okamoto Taro was his gTower of the Sun,h famous in Osaka Expo park. There are so many works like gChair Refusing to Seat Anyoneh besides fine arts. Such a wide variation of art surprised me very much. Of all his works, I was impressed by gFaceh (year 1952, TARO OKAMOTO MUSEUM of ART). What an innovative and warm texture! Ifm looking forward to visiting TARO OKAMOTO MUSEUM of ART some day.
While Kitaoji Rosanjin left a wide variety of ceramics or lacquer related to dining, he was also a calligrapher and gastronome. He provided the best, ideal ghospitality.h

DESUS series gGAIOh will be released soon. You will surely enjoy a good dining time with your family or friends. Look forward to our GAIO soon!

June, 2007 "Interiorlifestyle2007"

We presented our products at gInteriorlifestyle2007.h This is the second time since we made a presentation at g2006 OZONE Summer Tea Festival.h We were organizing gconcept of booth,h gdesign of booth,h and gconcept of decorationh for nine months, step by step with both internal and external staff members. I truly appreciate the staff members who were willing to engage in the business despite a sudden change of booth decoration during the trade show. After the trade show, on the way of home in a plane, I was motivated to serve customers as quickly as we can while I was relieved and satisfied with our success. We do our best to respond to our customers more positively and quickly than ever before.

gInteriorlifestyleh is an eye-catching domestic trade show as consumer goods trade show so tremendous guests visited throughout the days. Compared with other trade shows, visitors took more time to view each booth, relaxing and concentrating on viewing, hearing and touching various elaborate presentations at each booth.
The most popular area in the trade show was the special site gC/O/O/Lh where stylish, trendy, popular and narrative brands and products were decorated. Of particular note was an approach zone, where more than 10 brands were presented, leading h-concept in the center. I was just standing in such a comfortable space.

During this time, I learned a lot through exchanging information with presenters who are trying to find the way out of branding difficulties, just as we have done. Japanese manufacturers and planning companies, letfs do our best! We, the DESUS project, struggle to look ahead to the future while recognizing the current situation.

May, 2007 "Itfs nice to see you!"

Hi, This is Sumitani, deployed to the DESUS project April 2007.
I used to work in the Product Planning Section for Baby Goods. Since this was my first personnel change in 10 years, the last month has been a very new experience for me.
I put in practice at home, too, using the new "TENGA" series and "CONO" kitchenware, and I've realized the concept "Design with Us. "
The special this month is Bowl S, a ceramic dish from the "TENGA" series. It is very good to use not only for salad or pasta, but also sauce for soba (Cold soba with hot sauce with steamed duck is best! Butcpork or chicken is also good. It is much better to add seasonable vegetables!). Precisely because this TENGA bowl is designed simply, it matches both Japanese and western styles.

My weekend is tennis time. I play tennis with company club members for two hours. Participating in tournaments once or twice a year stimulates and encourages us to practice. We hope for good weather, not only for tennis, but other sports, BBQ, camping etc. So, DESUS project newly introduces a tableware series, "GAIO" You can use the items in the house as well as on the deck or in the garden. We will present them at the International Trade Show, "interiorlifestyle," held at Tokyo Big Site in June. Watch for it!

March, 2007 "TENGA"

We started to sell "TENGA," the new DESUS series, this month.
The concept is TENGA containers used as tableware: ggoes straight from refrigerator to table,h although conventional containers are aimed simply at food storage. You can pile the containers efficiently, saving space. We strongly recommend our TENGA as a gkitchen tool.h
TENGA is published in gAXIS April, vol. 126h issued by AXIS Co., Ltd. and gBegin May, No. 222h issued by SEKAI BUNKA PUBLISHING INC. Please take a look at them.

I guess you might have had many house parties during winter. There is an idea, which is popular in Europe, of gGarden as outdoor-living roomh. The spring has begun and itfs becoming warmer and warmer; you will have more enjoyable garden parties soon.

February, 2007 "TABLEWARE FESTIVAL 2007, ambiente"

I visited TABLEWARE FESTIVAL 2007 (from Feb. 3 to 12) held at Tokyo Dome City on Feb. 8. In the gDesignersf proposals for table coordination or dinner space,h both professional and amateur designers gave variety to tableware. What can we offer to the customers for each scene or taste of table? Thinking of this, I viewed those items. More visitors than last year were crowded like Grand Central Station at a showshop.
I went to Frankfurt for a review of gamibienteh (held from Feb. 9 to 13) the next day, Feb. 9.
I looked around the whole exhibition hall for a full day, and another day I focused on some particular sites.
The hall is so very wide--the same size as several Tokyo Big Sites--that it would be impossible to review all sites even if you had five days. Looking over the sites, I found that European companies are maverick makers who have their own tastes. Their approach to the customer is accurate: gWhat do they want to offer the customers? What kind of consumers do they focus on?h On the contrary, Japan tends to be quick to catch on to a trend as a good point, but the flip side is we just get caught up in the trend easily. Few Japanese companies have their own tastes.
Many Japanese booths were shown in gambiente.h Booths by some companies which have hot sellers attracted a lot of attention and huge crowds.
I try to think it over: gWhat is the DESUS identity?h with hints from what I saw, felt and learned at gambienteh and make proposals for future.

TABLEWARE FESTIVAL 2007

Many consumers visited TABLEWARE FESTIVAL 2007, although it was a weekday morning. They stared intently at the table coordination presented in gTheme: Family Anniversary.h

ambiente

gAmbienteh was held in approx. 10 buildings. Each hall was big enough, but it was also hard to move to between buildings. I wanted to save time by using the local bus running though the site.

Frankfurt
It is only in Romererg Platz and its surroundings, in the center of Frankfurt, that we feel the history. Skyscrapers tower over around the city.

January, 2007 gHouse Partyh

Happy New Year!! We had parties at home every weekend during the year-end through New Year holidays. Whenever we decide to hold a house party, my wife and I always enjoy preparing, coordinating the table and lights. By adding the gspices as the party peopleh to dishes or party items, ordinary dishes become more delicious and add to the comfort of our guests, too! So each time we have a party, my wife tries to make special dishes and decorate them to her taste, while I search for favorite party items. As a staff member of the DESUS project, I would like to show our concept gDesign with Ush by offering gyour taste itemsh which you will want to use long this year, too. I will report on the atmosphere (ambiente) held at Internationale Frankfurter Messe next month. Over 4,500 companies set up booths and nearly 150 thousand people visited there last year. I am looking forward to seeing, feeling and learning concept scenes and new products from each presenter.

TENG & Tateyama
TENGA, to be released in March. Placing fruits on TENGA plates helps their colors show more brightly. We have a warm winter, donft we? Tateyama is white, covered with snow every year, but we see bare hillside this year. Center is Tsurugidake in the glow of sunrise.
